5,00,000 Farmers From Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh Unable to Buy Fertilisers

One of the highlights of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's second term poll promises were doubling the income of farmers by 2022. However, in the absence of right conditions for farmers to earn more the target seems hard to achieve.

More than 5,00,000 farmers from the Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh have not been able to buy fertilisers for their farms for the past two weeks. Hundreds of farmers, both men and women can be seen lined up outside farm stores in the hope of buying fertilisers. Many of them have left their homes and are camping outside these stores overnight. One farmer even died waiting in line.

Our Community Correspondent Shankarlal spoke to the District Magistrate Annavi Dinesh Kumar who assured the farmers of appropriate legal action against the stores. At the same time, he also cautioned against gathering in large numbers at one place keeping in mind the COVID-19 scare.

It is to be noted that farmers, especially from the northern belt of Haryana, Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh have been protesting for a year against three new farm laws passed by the central government.
